Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service

The Becton Centre is Sheffield Children’s Hospital’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). The centre treats children and young people with a range of needs that are seriously impacting their mental health and emotional wellbeing.

In 2023 we started work on key spaces within the Becton Centre’s including the specialist eating disorders clinic, and the inpatient dining room – a key social space for those patients who may be resident at the Centre for a longer period of time.

Central to the project’s ethos was bringing the voices of patients into the design process and sharing that design journey with them.

Art+ designed a research-led workshop with the patients that experimented with tone and colour, to explore how these elements could impact mood and atmosphere.

We then led them through the procurement process and worked with them to select the furnishings and fixtures, ensuring that the final space reflected the patients’ hard work and input.

As part of the project we transformed the assessment room for the Supportive Treatment and Recovery service (STAR) at Sheffield Children’s acute site. The newly renovated triage room serves as a safe space for young individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.
